The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, also known as 'Madona Granda', there are traces dating back to the eighth century. According to history, the church stands on the ruins of a capital which retained a Virgin's image supposed to be miraculous. The church, with a rectangular plan, is divided into three naves. it was rebuilt again in late Gothic style in the second half of 1400 from the "Canonici Lateranensi", while maintaining only the image of the Virgin, work by Tomaso da Modena. In the early 1500s some of the bricks that formed the church were removed for the construction of new walls. The bombing of April 7, 1944, destroyed the nave and more than half of the main facade.
