Alvise Da Ponte magistrate, as a result of extraordinary drought, built it in 1559.

To celebrate the entry of the new Podesta, the fountain threw from one breast white wine and from the other black wine. The original statue, placed in a niche of the Praetorian Palace, retained its function until the fall of the Serenissima. The statue-fountain that can be seen in the courtyard of the palace Zignoli, is a faithful modern replica in Istrian stone by the peruvian sculptor Miguel Miranda. A nearby plaque shows the Matthew Sernagiotto's description: "... wanders marble women over the sea bay, she with both hands was squeezing the turgid tits, and two crystal clear water fountains, mercy industrious contraption of wheels, taken to the nearby Cagnano, offering plenty of liquor to the houses and surroundin shops"
