The origin of the inhabited nucleus of the lower Cismon valley is uncertain, but, apparently, it dates back to the Roman period, when "Feltria" constituted a "municipium". A Roman road passed through the territory of Fonzaso, the Via Paolina, a secondary branch of the Via Claudia Augusta Altinate. At the time of the barbarian invasions, two castles already existed in the territory: one was in Arten, on the valley outlet connecting with Pedavena; Among the ruins, in 1875, two silver basins with Gothic inscriptions were found. The second castle, of the Ghibelline Fonzasia family, was located at the foot of the Avena rocks, in the S. Michele area.
